Slayers of Rings and Crowns · Story-bearing Companions

Cameos

Specialized, story-driven campaign allies governed by distinct faction Spectrums and strict monthly deadlines. Navigate scripted Episodes through tactical Segments, unlock gated dialogue trees via point milestones, and make high-stakes choices at vital narrative Hooks before they leave your party forever.

Cameo NPCs

Cameos are specialized, story-driven Companions drawn from notable lineages that, when invited, join the adventuring campaign and to assist the party (to an extent), and introduce deep tactical advantages and narrative rewards, as their scripted stories unfold. Unlike other Companion types, only one Cameo is allowed in the party at any given time, and the party can choose when to remove them, but they have to wait for a certain point in the story called a Hook. Cameos tell their stories to the campaign during Segment points of Episodes. Episodes are short stories broken up into Segments, with each Segment ending in a Hook. At this Hook point of every Segment, the party has the choice between continuing their adventuring with the Cameo or Abandoning it. Abandoning a Cameo at a Hook is tricky because at every Hook various rewards are offered for completing the Segment.

Refer to the Companion section of our rules for further details.

Cameos possess their own distinct faction Standing Spectrums, and the party must begin with and maintain a Standing within the Spectrum of the Cameo's or they may leave, and eventually will. Between Hooks, a Cameo will only remain with the party for a maximum designated time limit measured in months. If the party neglects the Cameo's quest(s), and the deadline passes before the destination, the Cameo simply departs. The Cameo will only tolerate a Standing under Neutral for so long as well, before they leave the party. Characters can fix Standing with Cameos before the Segment deadline.

It's important to note, that Cameos will stay in parties that don't align to their Standing, to a certain extent, but they'll ignore Character requests from those Characters.

Cameos of many types can be discovered throughout cities, towns, wilderness camps, and active battlefields all across Essentia’s 13 planets, but as mentioned above, the party must abandon any accompanying Cameos in exchange for a new one.

Cameo Narrative System

The SORC Narrative Cameo system is played using two distinct formats: Physical/PDF Books and the Digital Workspace. While both versions share the exact same core mechanics and point-gating rules, the heavily illustrated printed books and standalone boxed Cameo Sets feature deeper lore and expanded story branches compared to the standard digital modules. When running a Cameo at the table using the book version, the system operates as a physical lookup tree; instead of an automated digital interface, the Game Master presents the Player with their multiple-choice dialogue options and then manually flips to a dedicated dialogue reference section in the book to locate and read the NPC's corresponding response.

Notable Cameo NPCs

Beyond the standard roster, Essentia is populated by historic lineages whose members can directly impact your adventures. While they cannot be selected at character creation, these Notable Races serve as a vital anchor for the world's lore and provide essential support to active player groups through the Cameo NPC system.

While our digital Modular Tools allow GMs to lock out Cameos entirely under Modular, doing so is strongly discouraged. Cameos provide crucial guidance, assist in combat, and can even reveal rare Talents, Skills, and Traits that your characters can choose to study and learn for themselves. They also add deep story elements to adventures. As your party establishes higher Standing with an accompanying Cameo, they will organically begin revealing pieces of their history and hidden backgrounds. This opens unique, multiple-choice dialogue trees that allow your characters to interview them and unlock deeper narrative threads.

Digital Cameo access: Campaign interactions are run by a signed-in GM, who reads the choices aloud and submits the player’s answer. The Serein demo is open beta and can be explored without GM sign-in. GM Assessment.

Cameo Candidates

  • Your Character: Your Character as a retired NPC - whether Hermit or Legend - can join other campaigns as a Cameo. See Character Growth - Retirement for more details.
  • Playable Races: Every Playable Race defined above may be an NPC candidate.
  • Darklings: Darklings make elusive allies, appearing at the edges of a crisis with knowledge or aid that may prove decisive. Their motives and customs remain a mystery, making trust something a party must earn.
  • Futurem: Futurem cameos bring the ingenuity and hard-won perspective of Undeximus to the party. Their alliance with the Tredeki places them on the front line of resistance to Omnè Astral, and their counsel can help adventurers navigate the conflict.

How Cameos Interaction Works

A Cameo is a story-bearing Companion. Its SORC Card defines its support abilities; its linked story provides its personal history, questions, responses, and conditions for loyalty or permanent departure.

Before the first interaction, the GM reads one concise history paragraph. The GM then reads Cameo’s question and the available Character responses. The Player chooses; the GM submits that response and reads Cameo’s spoken reply aloud. Recent interactions appear above the current scene, and the Full Log preserves the complete record.

Standing, Contribution Points, and Mood are separate values. Standing identifies the current relationship tier; Contribution Points track progress within that tier; Mood records the Companion’s current emotional and behavioral state. The story specifies loyalty and departure conditions. The Cameo’s Card and Companion rules govern support: defense begins at Respected Standing and Calm Mood; fighting alongside the Character requires Adored Standing or higher and the appropriate Mood. A Cameo will not join an Adventurer unless they are at least Neutral Standing and if anyone in the party is Hated, they'll attack. The Android Index-7 would attack any party if an Omnè was one of the Characters.

Cameo Interaction System

The GM tracks Standing Tier, its current-tier Contribution Points, and Mood separately. The Cameo workspace keeps the Mood dropdown and has a Standing Tier dropdown ordered Exalted to Hated. Standing Contribution lists Favor from Lifesaving down to Token, then Infamy from Negligent down to Treasonous. Each choice shows its point value and applies it to Cameo’s current-tier score. Favor adds points; Infamy subtracts them and follows the demotion rule. Exalted has no cap, and Hated is permanent.

For a scripted Event, follow the Favor or Infamy level assigned by the Module. For an action outside a scripted Event, the GM decides whether it changes Standing and chooses a level from the chart in the Standing rules. Apply it to the affected record only. If the story specifies a direct tier result, the story applies that result instead; do not apply an additional point action.

A Cameo’s authored progression Gates are set at 25% and 75% of each capped tier: Neutral 1,625 / 4,875; Liked 14,375 / 43,125; Respected 24,325 / 72,975; Adored 61,350 / 184,050; Cherished 154,675 / 464,025. Exalted uses two uncapped story milestones, 154,675 and 309,350. A Cameo will not talk to you if your Standing with them is below Neutral.

Just as with Segments and Hooks, crossing a Gate upward opens its associated question, followed by two to four authored follow-up questions along the selected story branch. Each standard question offers three to five Character responses; the GM uses Next between beats and Close after the final reply. A Hook presents exactly three choices, with one being the choice of abandoning the Cameo, when the Dialog is closed, but still logged. The Cameo will never join the party again.

Cameos present short warnings with no Character choices when Standing behind to drop. Some Cameos will mock the party when they fail on rolls and praise them when they succeed on rolls, but this type of narration is dependent entirely on the Cameo's personality, Mood, and whether the GM wants to use these scripts, or even make their own—the party doesn't need to know the source.

Furthermore, the GM has a screen tool that shows what the Cameo currently calls the players. Always start by using the baseline "Neutral" nickname. For example, at Neutral Standing, the Cameo Serein calls each Character of the party "Organic," but if they reach Respected Standing, the name switches to "Programmer.". These are used at the GMs discretion, and they can of course fill in their own. Insult and praise dialogs promoted by Mood or the GM themselves, are purely dialogue and do not alter standing unless the text explicitly states otherwise.

At Tolerable Standing, a Cameo does not initiate harm, though the GM may resolve retaliation if the Character wrongs him. Disliked and Hated Standing require the GM to resolve an attack when the Character enters detection range; Hated is permanent. Annoyed or Distressed Mood causes a Cameo to leave independently of Standing. An insult has no automatic Standing or Mood effect unless the Cameo's story defines one.

A story choice changes Standing, Mood, loyalty, or departure status only when its authored outcome says so. Every submitted response and GM dialogue beat is saved with the timestamp, node title, active prompt, selected Character response, reply, and GM note. Submitted choices are not restored or edited; start a new run for another playthrough.

Read the Cameo Core and the Standing rules alongside the story.

How to Use This System

For the GM

  1. Select the Campaign: Create or select the named campaign, then choose the story, Character, and run. Confirm the selected campaign before recording play.
  2. Set Standing and Mood: Select the Standing Tier and set Mood independently. When a choice specifies a Favor or Infamy value, choose it in Standing Contribution; its listed value is added to or subtracted from the current-tier score and saved automatically. For an action outside a scripted Event, use the GM chart in the Standing rules. Do not apply point actions when the story gives a direct tier result.
  3. Present the story: Read the one-paragraph history briefing before the first interaction. Then read Serein’s active question and all available Character responses as written. The Player chooses; do not answer for the Character.
  4. Submit and continue: Submit the Player’s exact choice and read Serein’s reply aloud. Use Next when the reply leads to another authored question; use Close after the sequence’s final reply. Story Events and GM interruptions have two choices.
  5. Apply point-Gate transitions: When updated Contribution Points cross an authored Serein Gate, present that story sequence. On a downward tier change or a fall below a reached Gate, read the warning and close it. If no Gate is crossed, keep the active screen unchanged.
  6. Use the GM tools when they fit: Keep the GM reminder above the active dialogue, add missing table details in the GM Log Notes field, and use the success/failure dialogue buttons after the corresponding roll. For a Serein Event, roll its category, review the preview, then apply or dismiss it. Attack resolution stays with the GM; Self-Destruct requires confirmation.
  7. Check the Full Log: Verify the timestamp, node title, active prompt, selected Character response, Serein’s reply, and any GM note. A new run preserves earlier logs; submitted choices are not restored or edited.

Fuldiloaf

Bridge Troll (City Troll) · Keeper of the Creek

Fuldiloaf is a City Troll who turned to the wild for solitude. He lives on the outskirts of a city in the northern territory of the Chisel Islands, keeping watch—without the city’s authority—over wild paths that lead back toward his city roots. The wild is familiar to him, cramped darkness is a comfort, and open spaces make him edgy.
